WHY PATIENTS NEED THEIR WISDOM TEETH REMOVED

Why patients in Powell need their wisdom teeth removed

For a lot of people, wisdom teeth cause problems long before they ever fully come in. They’re often impacted, crowded, or growing in at an angle that puts pressure on your other teeth, leading to pain, swelling, or recurring infections.

You might already be in real pain and need relief fast, or you might just be trying to plan ahead, figure out what it’ll cost, and how much time you’ll need to recover before scheduling anything.

Here's what we hear most often:

"My wisdom teeth are killing me and I need relief."

"My dentist said my wisdom teeth are impacted."

"I want to know how long recovery actually takes before I schedule time off."

"I need to know what this is going to cost, with or without insurance."

Sounds Familiar?

If any of that sounds familiar, you're in the right place. We hold same-day openings for wisdom tooth pain that can't wait, and we'll give you a clear, honest picture of cost and recovery time before you commit to anything.

THE BASICS

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars, typically coming in between ages 17 and 25. Not everyone develops all four, and not everyone needs them removed, but many people run into problems because there simply isn’t enough room in the jaw for them.

Impacted wisdom teeth

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that's stuck, either under the gum or bone, or growing in at an angle instead of straight up. Impacted teeth are more likely to cause pain, infection, or damage to nearby teeth, which is usually why they need to come out.

Signs you may need your wisdom teeth removed

Common signs include pain or pressure at the back of your jaw, swelling, headaches or ear pain, difficulty opening your mouth fully, or crowding in your other teeth. We'll confirm what's going on with an exam and X-rays.

How long does wisdom teeth removal take?

Most extractions take about 30 to 60 minutes total, depending on how many teeth you're having removed and whether they're impacted. A straightforward case goes quickly; a more complex, impacted extraction can take a bit longer.

Strong. Natural. Built for you.

Whatever type you choose, your crown is custom-made to fit your bite and match your smile — not a generic, one-size-fits-all solution.

Most extractions take about 30 to 60 minutes total, though it depends on how many teeth you’re having removed and whether they’re impacted. Straightforward cases go quickly; impacted or more complex extractions can take a bit longer.

Initial healing, like swelling and soreness, typically settles within 3 to 5 days, and most patients are back to normal activities within a week. Full healing of the socket itself continues over the following weeks.

Cost depends on how many teeth you’re having removed, whether they’re impacted, and your choice of sedation. We’ll examine your case with X-rays and give you a clear, itemized estimate before any treatment begins.

Many dental insurance plans cover at least a portion of wisdom teeth removal, since it’s typically considered medically necessary, especially for impacted teeth. Coverage varies by plan, so we’ll verify your specific benefits before your appointment.

Stick to soft foods, like soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies without a straw, for the first few days. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods, along with straws, since they can dislodge the blood clot protecting your extraction site.

ecific case and insurance coverage.

It’s often a dull ache or pressure at the back of your jaw, sometimes radiating toward your ear or head, and it usually gets worse when chewing. You may also notice swelling or tenderness in the gums around the tooth.

Crowns are made from porcelain, zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or gold and metal alloys, each offering a different balance of strength, durability, and natural appearance.

Yes. Wisdom teeth, especially impacted ones, can cause referred pain that feels like a headache or ear pain, since the nerves in that area are closely connected. If you’re having these symptoms, we’ll check whether a wisdom tooth is the cause.

Swelling usually peaks around day 2 or 3 after surgery, then gradually improves, typically resolving within a week. A cold compress during the first 24 to 48 hours can help keep it manageable.

Dry socket happens when the blood clot protecting your extraction site is dislodged or dissolves too early, exposing the bone and nerve underneath. It usually causes noticeable pain a few days after surgery. Avoiding straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing helps prevent it, and you should call us right away if you suspect it.

Not always. Some wisdom teeth erupt fully, align properly, and cause no problems. Many others are impacted, crowded, or positioned in a way that causes issues over time, which is why we recommend evaluating yours with X-rays before deciding.

No. Once a wisdom tooth, or any adult tooth, is removed, it does not grow back.

It can be. Severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection around a wisdom tooth are treated as emergencies, and we hold same-day openings for exactly that. A wisdom tooth that isn’t currently causing problems is usually scheduled for removal in advance instead.
