"I'm terrified of the dentist and keep putting off care."
"I have a strong gag reflex and can't sit through long procedures."
"My child needs extensive work done and I don't know how they'll handle it."
"I have a lot of dental work ahead of me and want to be comfortable through all of it."
If any of that sounds familiar, you're in the right place. We offer multiple levels of sedation and will give you an honest recommendation for what actually fits your needs, not a one-size-fits-all answer.
Oral sedation is administered by a single pill, while you remain completely awake. It can help if you have mild anxiety, without the need to be completely under. A common misconception is that you'll be fully asleep — with the correct dosage, you should never be rendered unconscious, as that poses a serious health risk. Our certified staff always takes great care to administer oral sedation exactly as instructed.
IV sedation is administered intravenously and provides a deeper, more relaxed feeling than oral sedation. It's a great fit if you have moderate to severe anxiety. To keep you completely comfortable for longer cases and higher anxiety, we bring in a licensed anesthesiologist specifically for your appointment. You're monitored with hospital-standard equipment by the anesthesiologist and our trained assistants, to ensure the safest, most relaxed experience possible.
With general anesthesia, you're completely asleep for the duration of your procedure. We're proud to offer this option, and our team can tailor anesthetic services to your individual needs, with a consultation to help you decide which treatment is the best fit.
At Bright Smile Dental, we partner with Smile MD to relieve patient anxiety over dental procedures. Smile MD provides safe, hospital-grade anesthetic care on-site, so you get specialist-level support without leaving our office.

Longer or more involved treatment feels manageable instead of overwhelming.

You no longer have to put off treatment because the thought of the dentist is too stressful.

For IV sedation and general anesthesia, a licensed anesthesiologist and our trained team monitor you with hospital-standard equipment the entire time.

From a single pill to full anesthesia, your sedation plan is built around your anxiety level and the procedure ahead.

Whatever's kept you or your child from the dentist, our team meets you where you are, without judgment.

Through our partnership with Smile MD, you get specialist-level anesthetic care without needing to go to a hospital.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS SAY
950+ five-star ratings on Google. Here’s what a few patients had to say about feeling comfortable in our care:
I have suffered from extreme dental anxiety due to past traumas my entire life. I wrote a letter explaining in detail my anxieties and how they could best help. They were amazing! They never judged, reassured me the entire time, and offer different types of sedation. They explained the costs up front with detailed breakdowns.
Dr. Cheung is an excellent dentist, he took care of my unique situation when no one in the Columbus area would do it. I had an impacted wisdom tooth that needed to be extracted. I am very sensitive to chemicals and drugs in general, and he was the only dentist to listen to my needs and use local anesthesia instead of any sedation drugs. Every dentist in Columbus wanted to use sedation and would not listen to me. If you have an emergency or need general care, don’t think twice, this is an excellent practice.
I called in for a same day emergency visit for my lower left wisdom tooth. I got in the same day thanks to the receptionist hearing me out and listening to my concerns. I was expecting to only get my lower left tooth pulled, but Dr. C and his team managed to pull not 1 but all 4 of my wisdom teeth at a last-minute emergency appointment. Next, it was time to get numb for the extractions (it was too late in the day for sedation). Dr. C and his team made sure my level of comfort was their top priority. With the help of Dr. C and his assistant Cheyenne, they overall made my experience one of the best. I will continue to visit this office even outside of emergencies! 10/10!

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental treatment, ranging from a mild, fully-awake state to being completely asleep, depending on which level is right for you.
No. Whether you’re having oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, the area being treated is also numbed, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure itself.
With oral sedation, you stay awake the entire time, just deeply relaxed. With IV sedation or general anesthesia, you’re monitored continuously throughout, so the level stays consistent and you won’t unexpectedly wake up mid-procedure.
Yes. For IV sedation and general anesthesia, you’re monitored with hospital-standard equipment by a licensed anesthesiologist and our trained team for the entire appointment.
It depends on the type of sedation and the length of your procedure. Oral sedation wears off gradually over a few hours, while IV sedation and general anesthesia are dosed to last exactly as long as your treatment requires.
Yes, if you’re having IV sedation or general anesthesia, you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you afterward, since the effects take time to fully wear off. Depending on your dosage, oral sedation may also require a ride.
Cost depends on the type of sedation and the length of your procedure. We’ll walk you through pricing at your consultation, along with your insurance coverage and financing options.
You may feel some pressure or sensitivity, but we numb the area first, so the deep cleaning itself shouldn’t be painful. Your gums may feel a little sore or tender for a day or two afterward, similar to any dental procedure.
Yes, when administered by trained professionals. Our team follows strict protocols, and for IV sedation and general anesthesia, we bring in a licensed anesthesiologist and monitor you with hospital-standard equipment throughout.
