"I have a severe toothache and I'm scared it's a root canal."
"I heard root canals are one of the most painful procedures."
"My dentist said the infection reached the nerve."
"I want to know if I need a root canal or if my tooth can be saved another way."
If any of that sounds familiar, take a breath. With modern techniques and thorough numbing, most patients say a root canal feels a lot like getting a filling. We hold same-day openings for patients in real pain, so you're not stuck waiting.
Common signs include lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, a persistent toothache, pain when chewing or biting, and swelling or tenderness in the gums. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and it's caught on a routine X-ray.
Modern root canals are performed with local anesthesia, so the procedure itself typically feels similar to getting a filling. The pain people associate with root canals almost always comes from the infection itself, before treatment starts.
Most root canals take about 60 to 90 minutes for a single tooth, though it varies depending on which tooth is involved and how complex the case is. Some cases are completed in one visit; others take two.
For most back teeth, yes. A root canal-treated tooth loses its blood supply and becomes more brittle over time, so a crown protects it from cracking under everyday chewing pressure. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling if enough natural structure remains. We'll tell you honestly what your specific tooth needs.

Here’s what root canal treatment at Bright Smile Dental does for you:

A root canal saves the tooth you already have, instead of pulling it and needing a replacement down the road.

We hold same-day openings for patients in real pain, so you're not stuck waiting for relief.

With thorough numbing and modern technique, most patients are surprised by how manageable the procedure actually is.

Treating an infected tooth promptly protects your surrounding teeth and your overall health.

We'll tell you honestly whether you need a crown afterward, and what that means for cost and timeline.

Here’s what the process looks like from your side of the chair:
We take X-rays and confirm exactly what’s going on, so you know whether a root canal is really what your tooth needs.
We numb the area thoroughly so the procedure is as comfortable as possible from start to finish.
We remove the infected tissue, clean and seal the space inside your tooth, and check that the infection is fully addressed.
If your tooth needs a crown to stay protected long term, we’ll walk you through that next step and timeline.

A root canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside your tooth, cleans and seals the space, and saves your natural tooth instead of extracting it.
Most root canals take about 60 to 90 minutes for a single tooth, though it varies depending on which tooth is involved and how complex the case is. Some cases are completed in one visit, others take two.
Modern root canals are performed with local anesthesia, so the procedure itself typically feels similar to getting a filling. The pain people associate with root canals usually comes from the infection itself, before treatment, not the procedure that fixes it.
Common signs include lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, a persistent toothache, pain when chewing or biting, swelling or tenderness in the gums, or a small bump on the gum near the tooth. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and it’s caught on a routine X-ray.
Cost depends on which tooth is involved (molars are typically more complex than front teeth) and whether you’ll need a crown afterward. Many insurance plans cover a portion of root canal treatment since it’s restorative care. We’ll give you a clear, itemized estimate at your consultation.
For most back teeth, yes. A root canal-treated tooth loses its blood supply and becomes more brittle over time, so a crown protects it from cracking under everyday chewing pressure. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling if enough natural structure remains. We’ll tell you honestly what your specific tooth needs.
A root canal saves your natural tooth, which is almost always the better long-term option for chewing function and keeping your other teeth from shifting. Extraction is usually reserved for teeth that are too damaged or infected to be saved.
Wait until the numbness fully wears off, then stick to soft foods for a day or two if you have a temporary filling or crown in place. Avoid chewing directly on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is placed.
With a properly placed crown or filling and good oral hygiene, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime. Most last well over 10 to 15 years.
It’s uncommon, but yes, a root canal can occasionally fail or become reinfected if bacteria find their way back in. Renewed pain or swelling are the main signs, and it’s usually treatable with retreatment.
It can be. Severe pain, swelling, or signs of a spreading infection are treated as emergencies, and we hold same-day openings for exactly that. A root canal that isn’t causing acute symptoms is typically scheduled in the days ahead instead.
We’re here to get you out of pain and help you keep your natural tooth — let’s get started.
