WHY PATIENTS NEED A FILLING

Why patients in Powell need a cavity filled

Sometimes a cavity turns up at a routine checkup before you’ve felt a thing. Other times, a tooth starts aching or a filling you’ve had for years suddenly falls out. Either way, you’re probably wondering how serious it is, what it’ll cost, and how fast you can get it fixed. A cavity doesn’t get better on its own, but the good news is that most fillings are quick, straightforward, and far less stressful than people expect.

Here's what we hear most often:

"My dentist found a cavity at my last checkup."

"My filling fell out and I don't know what to do."

"My tooth is sensitive to sweets and cold."

"I want to know what a cavity actually looks like before I panic."

Sounds Familiar?

If any of that sounds familiar, take a breath. Most fillings are done in a single visit, and we'll walk you through exactly what we're seeing and what it'll take to fix it, before we touch a drill.

THE BASICS

What is a dental cavity?

A cavity is a small hole in your tooth caused by decay, where acids from bacteria and food have worn through the enamel. Left untreated, it grows larger and can eventually reach the nerve, which is why catching it early matters.

What does a cavity look like?

Cavities often show up as a dark spot, brown or black discoloration, or a chalky white patch on the tooth's surface. In more advanced cases, you might see an actual pit or hole. That said, plenty of cavities, especially between teeth, aren't visible at all without an X-ray.

Cavity symptoms

Common signs include sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods, a toothache, or pain when biting down. Many cavities cause no symptoms at all in the early stages, which is exactly why routine checkups catch things you wouldn't notice on your own.

Cavities between your teeth

Cavities that form between two teeth are some of the hardest to catch, since you can't see or easily feel them. Food frequently getting stuck in the same spot, or mild, hard-to-pinpoint sensitivity, can be a clue. We routinely check for these with X-rays during your exam.

What if my filling fell out?

It happens more often than you'd think, and it's usually not a true emergency, but it shouldn't wait too long either. The exposed tooth is more vulnerable to further decay, sensitivity, and breakage the longer it goes unaddressed, so call us and we'll get you in quickly.

Step by step

The tooth filling procedure: what to expect

Getting a cavity filled is a simple, well-established process. Here’s what it looks like from your side of the chair:

01

Your exam & diagnosis

We take a close look, use X-rays as needed, and confirm the size and location of the cavity before deciding on the right approach.

02

Your numbing

We numb the area thoroughly so the rest of the procedure is comfortable, with little to no sensation.

03

Your filling placement

We remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill it with a tooth-colored composite material, shaped and shaded to match your natural tooth.

05

Enjoy your healthy smile!

With proper care, fillings can last for years to come!

04

Your bite check and aftercare

We check your bite to make sure the filling feels natural, and walk you through anything to expect as the numbness wears off.

No. We numb the area before starting, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the filling itself. You may notice some mild sensitivity or soreness for a day or two afterward, which typically resolves on its own.

Most fillings take about 20 to 45 minutes per tooth, depending on the size and location of the cavity. If you have multiple cavities, we can often fill more than one in the same visit.

Call us as soon as you can. It’s not usually a true emergency, but the exposed tooth is more vulnerable to further decay, breakage, and sensitivity the longer it goes unfixed, so it’s best not to wait. In the meantime, keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side.

Cost depends on the size of the cavity, the material used, and your insurance coverage. We verify your benefits and give you a clear, itemized estimate before any treatment begins, with financing available through CareCredit and Cherry if needed.

Yes, though we recommend waiting until the numbness fully wears off so you don’t accidentally bite your cheek or tongue. If you had a tooth-colored filling, it’s fully hardened before you leave, so there’s no need to avoid any particular foods afterward.

Not in the traditional sense, but the bacteria that cause cavities can be passed between people through saliva, like sharing utensils or kissing. That’s one reason good oral hygiene matters for the whole family, not just the person with the cavity.

In the very earliest stage, before it’s actually formed a hole, tooth decay can sometimes be reversed with fluoride treatment and better oral hygiene. Once a true cavity has formed, though, it needs a filling — it won’t heal on its own.

Cavities between teeth can be harder to notice than ones on a visible surface. Watch for food frequently getting stuck in the same spot, sensitivity to sweets or temperature, or mild aching. Many are only caught with X-rays during a routine exam.

Composite, tooth-colored fillings typically last 7 to 10 years with good care, though it varies by location in the mouth and how much chewing pressure the tooth handles. We’ll keep an eye on your fillings at your regular checkups.

Most dental insurance plans cover a significant portion of a routine filling, since it’s considered preventive and restorative care. We’ll verify your specific benefits so you know your out-of-pocket cost before treatment.
